“Bad” Students: Medication vs Discipline

[DISCLAIMER: I am not advocating corporal punishment or whipping children. I’m merely soliciting opinion and trying to engage you in a discussion. This is a re-post of a  discussion on my Facebook page. ~ GES]

In talking to a grandmother of one of my students on Friday, I realized there is a debate brewing about dealing with behavior.

The student has a medical diagnosis and hasn’t been taking his medications and his behavior is off the chain.
Grandmama said, “He don’t need no medication, he just need a good ol’ butt whooping. (Well, she didn’t actually use butt…lol)

My question to you is: Do students actually need medication for their behaviors or are the problems coming with how they are being taught discipline at home?

Talk to me…give me your feedback and thoughts.
